The Palio of carts in Montepulciano (Tuscany)


The Palio carts started life in 1975 as a corollary of the celebrations of the Holy Crucifix, this year reaches its 34th edition. Traditionally, in medieval times, there would be an uphill struggle with the horses on the Road to the Church of Loreto by Customs Chief Valiano. Valiano is divided into six districts, whose names are identified in places that already exist in medieval times. The Contrade which are held every fourth Sunday of September the "cream" painted this year by the Sienese painter Fabrizio Biagi, are: CASTLE (yellow-green), CHIESINA (red-black), Customs (white-blue), Font ( white-red), Padula (yellow-red) and BRIDGE (red-blue).
The "cart", a means of entertainment of young Valiano, consists of four planks of hardwood that interconnected, form a geometric elongated isosceles trapezoid, and two "bobbins" with the ends of two pairs of steel ball bearings which the front steering axle and two hand brakes located at the rear of the vehicle. The race consists of several runs that select the districts that will play the final. The start is located on the highest hill in the country to about 330 m., the carts do a stretch of about 1 km. down gradient of up to 15% and with three curves notoriously challenging. Before the races, of exquisite beauty, the major parade in the history of medieval clothing districts that evokes the glories of the ancient historical castle Valiano.

Coinciding with the Palio is held also the Feast of Vin Santo.
